Sources: Handwriting Matters 9 CommentsVery.good handwriting . Natanem solmon May 18, 2023I was in 7th grade inn 1959. Every kid wrote cursive script. How, I do not remember, but I decided to write all block upper case letters with, since the teachers seemed to hve thing about capitalization, caps just bigger. I was a straight A student ad the wimpiest boy you would ever see outside the funnies page of your local newspaper. The teacher apparently did not know what to do. As an A student he apparently decided not to try to flunk me. So he THREATENED me tha while I might get away with it in school I would never be able to keep up in college. He was a large man: a lacrosse coach. I cowered in my little student desk. Finally he took his body away and I have kept writing all block upper case letters now for over 60 years, including graduating Yale summa cum laude along the way. I will never understand what his problem with himself was. But there was a problem: my writing could no longer be graded. The teacher can’t take off points for an undotted ‘i’ when ‘I’ has no dot. It was the only thing in my life whre I was not doing something I was being told what to do by the adults. So it gave me a tiny bit of feeling I was an individual person with a little bit of agency. Had the teacher beat me back into curcive writing I probalby would never have had any sense of self worth or hope for the rest of my life: Passum sub iugum. As for writing speed, they never taught us kids shorthand. Mine may be a unique case, but I feet I have a right to life, too. I wan’t hurting anybody, but I was assserting individual initiative which I guess the adults could not handle. They wanted “A” students. I got A’s but did not want to be graded at all. So, for me, handwriing was a really “big thing”. Whenever I write anything by hand, I always think that it’s something I desiged myself, not just doing something other people conditioned the child I was to be. I also did not plesae the teachers by doing all my math assignments in indelible ink. I do not like to write with a pencil. These days I use a Cross classic ballpoint pen — same as the one the man at the top of this page is using. Bradford Robert McCormick March 6, 2023 Wonderful work you are doing .
